Pekingese are dignified but playful; independent thinkers and easily trained. They are tolerate of the cold but can not stand the heat so care must be taken to guard against over heating. Pekingese the Chinese toy dog is also called the Lion Dog, Peke, Foo dog. The Pekingese is closely related to the Japanese Chin in appearance. It weighs 7 to 14 pounds, and is 6 to 9 inches at the withers. Any Pekingese that's lower than 6 pounds is a Sleeve Pekingese. There is a profusely long haired variety, preferred in dog shows, and a short Spaniel-type version. The former has a feathery, free-flowing, and extra large coat that comes in gold, red, sable, cream, black, white, tan, parti and less commonly, blue and gray colors. It has a small, flat, wrinkled, black muzzle. They have squat legs and a striking gait. Life expectancy 10 to 15 years. They're solid watchdogs; always to alert you if something is a miss. Grooming The Pekingese coat is its crowing glory and is easily maintained a weekly brushing will avoid matting. Keeping the nails trimmed, teeth cleaned and the fold of skin over the nose clean and dry is part of routine maintenance. Teach your Peke to sit still as you trim the hair on the nose wrinkle. This keeps that hair out of his eyes. I like to trim the hair from between the paws and it is necessary to do an anal trim for sanitary purposes.
